🚌 Brake System Inspection Checklist - Safety

Comprehensive brake system inspection for all types of buses to ensure passenger safety and DOT compliance. Critical for preventing accidents and ensuring optimal braking performance.

🛑 CRITICAL SAFETY NOTICE

Brake system failures are the leading cause of commercial vehicle accidents. All critical items must be addressed immediately before vehicle operation. This checklist ensures DOT compliance and passenger safety.

Visual Brake System Inspection

  • Inspect brake pedal for proper travel and firm feel (should not go to floor)
  • Check parking brake engagement and holding capability
  • Examine brake warning lights and dashboard indicators
  • Verify brake fluid reservoir level and color clarity
  • Look for any visible fluid leaks around brake components
  • Check brake booster operation (vacuum or hydraulic assist)
  • Ensure brake pedal returns fully when released

Brake Pads & Shoes Inspection

  • Measure brake pad thickness (minimum 3mm for front, 2mm for rear)
  • Check for uneven wear patterns across all pads
  • Inspect brake shoe lining thickness and condition
  • Look for cracking, glazing, or oil contamination on friction material
  • Verify pad and shoe mounting hardware is secure
  • Check for proper contact with rotors/drums
  • Replace if thickness is below DOT minimum standards

Brake Rotors & Drums

  • Measure rotor thickness and check against manufacturer specifications
  • Inspect rotor surface for scoring, cracking, or heat damage
  • Check drum internal diameter and surface condition
  • Look for blue discoloration indicating overheating
  • Verify rotor/drum runout is within acceptable limits
  • Check for warping or irregular wear patterns
  • Replace rotors/drums if below minimum thickness or cracked

Brake Lines & Hoses

  • Inspect all brake lines for corrosion, kinks, or damage
  • Check flexible brake hoses for cracks, bulging, or leaks
  • Verify proper routing and secure mounting of brake lines
  • Look for signs of brake fluid contamination or moisture
  • Check brake line fittings and connections for tightness
  • Inspect protective coverings and guards
  • Replace any damaged or deteriorated lines immediately

Air Brake System (if equipped)

  • Check air compressor operation and cut-in/cut-out pressures
  • Test air system buildup time (should reach 100 psi in 45 seconds)
  • Inspect air tanks for moisture, oil, and proper drainage
  • Check air governor and pressure protection valve operation
  • Test spring brake and service brake operation
  • Verify air brake adjustment and stroke length
  • Ensure system maintains minimum 90 psi for safe operation

Brake Performance Testing

  • Conduct low-speed brake effectiveness test in safe area
  • Check for pulling to one side during braking
  • Test emergency brake stopping distance and holding power
  • Verify ABS system operation (if equipped) with warning light test
  • Check brake balance between all wheels
  • Test brake performance under various load conditions
  • Vehicle must stop within DOT-specified distances

Documentation & Compliance

  • Record all measurements and inspection findings
  • Document any repairs or adjustments made
  • Update maintenance logs with inspection date and results
  • Ensure compliance with DOT brake system regulations
  • Schedule follow-up inspections based on findings
  • Maintain inspection records for regulatory compliance
  • Tag out-of-service vehicles until repairs completed
