Bus Safety Checklist

Comprehensive safety inspection for mechanical components, safety equipment, and compliance with DOT safety standards to ensure passenger and driver safety.

Braking Systems

  • Test brake pedal travel and feel - must be firm and responsive without excessive travel.
  • Check air brake system pressure within specifications (90-125 PSI operating range).
  • Inspect brake pads and shoes for adequate thickness and even wear patterns.
  • Examine brake rotors and drums for excessive wear, scoring, or warping damage.
  • Verify parking brake holds vehicle securely on incline and releases properly.
  • Test emergency brake valve for accessibility and proper functionality.
  • Confirm low air warning buzzer and indicator light activate at proper pressure.

Steering & Suspension Systems

  • Check steering wheel free play within acceptable limits (less than 2 inches).
  • Verify power steering fluid level is adequate with no visible leaks.
  • Inspect tie rods and steering linkages for security with no excessive wear or play.
  • Test air suspension system for proper ride height maintenance and operation.
  • Examine shock absorbers and struts for leaks, damage, or mounting issues.
  • Inspect leaf springs or air bags for good condition without cracks or damage.
  • Verify steering responds smoothly without binding or unusual effort required.

Lighting & Electrical Systems

  • Test headlights for proper operation on both high and low beam settings.
  • Verify tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals are operational and visible.
  • Check hazard warning lights and emergency flashers function properly.
  • Inspect marker lights and reflectors for cleanliness and visibility.
  • Test interior passenger lighting for adequate illumination and function.
  • Verify dashboard warning lights and gauges are functioning correctly.
  • Confirm emergency exit lighting is clearly visible and operational.

Tires & Wheels

  • Measure tire tread depth to meet minimum requirements (4/32" front, 2/32" rear).
  • Check tire pressure matches manufacturer specifications on all wheels.
  • Inspect tires for cuts, bulges, or irregular wear patterns that indicate problems.
  • Verify wheel lug nuts are properly torqued with none missing or loose.
  • Examine wheels and rims for cracks, damage, or structural integrity issues.
  • Check hub oil seals for leaks and ensure wheel bearings are secure.
  • Confirm all tires are properly mounted with correct valve stem positioning.

Emergency Equipment & Safety Devices

  • Verify fire extinguisher is mounted, fully charged, and within inspection date.
  • Check first aid kit is present and stocked with all required supplies.
  • Confirm emergency triangles/reflectors are available and easily accessible.
  • Test that emergency exits are clearly marked and operate properly.
  • Verify emergency door release mechanisms function correctly and smoothly.
  • Inspect passenger handholds and grab rails for security and condition.
  • Ensure emergency evacuation procedures are posted and clearly visible.

Driver Safety Systems

  • Test driver's seat adjustability and security in all operating positions.
  • Adjust all mirrors properly and inspect for damage or visibility obstruction.
  • Clean windshield and windows ensuring no obstructed view areas.
  • Test horn for audible operation at proper volume and clarity.
  • Verify windshield wipers and washer system operate effectively in all modes.
  • Check two-way radio or communication system functionality and clarity.
  • Ensure driver compartment controls are accessible and functioning properly.

Body & Structural Integrity

  • Inspect body panels for security with no loose or damaged sections.
  • Check for rust or corrosion that might compromise structural integrity.
  • Test that doors open, close, and latch properly without binding or force.
  • Verify passenger seats are securely mounted and in good operational condition.
  • Inspect floor areas for holes, tears, or potential passenger trip hazards.
  • Check steps and entry areas have clean and intact non-slip surfaces.
  • Examine window integrity and ensure proper latching and sealing mechanisms.

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Check engine oil level and condition for proper viscosity and cleanliness.
  • Verify coolant level and inspect cooling system for leaks or damage.
  • Test engine starts normally without excessive smoke or unusual noises.
  • Inspect transmission fluid level and condition if separately accessible.
  • Check drive belts for proper tension, alignment, and absence of cracking.
  • Verify exhaust system is secure with no visible leaks or damage.
  • Monitor engine temperature and pressure gauges during operation test.

Accessibility & Compliance Features

  • Test wheelchair lift or ramp operation for smooth and complete cycles.
  • Verify wheelchair securement positions and tie-down anchor points.
  • Check priority seating areas are clearly marked and unobstructed.
  • Ensure destination signs and route information displays function properly.
  • Test passenger announcement system for clear audio throughout vehicle.
  • Verify fare collection equipment operates correctly and securely.
