Daily Van or Minibus Inspection Checklist

Perform daily inspections for vans and minibuses to ensure operational safety, compliance, and readiness before departure.

Exterior Vehicle Inspection

  • Check all exterior lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights).
  • Inspect tires for proper pressure, tread depth, and visible damage or wear.
  • Examine vehicle body for dents, scratches, or damage that could affect safety.
  • Verify all mirrors are clean, properly adjusted, and securely mounted.
  • Check windshield and windows for cracks, chips, or obstructions.
  • Ensure license plates are secure and clearly visible.
  • Inspect door handles, locks, and emergency exits for proper operation.
  • Check for any fluid leaks under the vehicle.

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Check engine oil level and condition (color and consistency).
  • Verify coolant level and inspect for leaks in the cooling system.
  • Inspect brake fluid level and ensure reservoir is properly filled.
  • Check power steering fluid level and condition.
  • Verify windshield washer fluid level and spray function.
  • Inspect belts and hoses for cracks, fraying, or loose connections.
  • Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure secure connections.
  • Test horn and ensure it operates at proper volume.

Interior Safety & Passenger Area

  • Inspect all passenger seats for damage, wear, or loose mountings.
  • Check seat belts for proper operation and signs of wear or damage.
  • Ensure all interior lights are functioning properly.
  • Verify emergency exits are clearly marked and unobstructed.
  • Check that first aid kit is present, accessible, and properly stocked.
  • Inspect fire extinguisher for proper charge and accessibility.
  • Ensure interior is clean and free of debris or hazards.
  • Check that emergency contact information is posted and current.

Driver Controls & Instruments

  • Test all dashboard warning lights during startup sequence.
  • Check fuel gauge and ensure adequate fuel for planned routes.
  • Verify speedometer, odometer, and other gauges are functioning.
  • Test windshield wipers and washer system operation.
  • Check heating and air conditioning system operation.
  • Ensure steering wheel operates smoothly without excessive play.
  • Test brake pedal for proper feel and no excessive travel.
  • Verify parking brake engages and releases properly.

Safety Equipment & Emergency Preparedness

  • Verify emergency triangles or flares are present and accessible.
  • Check that emergency evacuation procedures are posted.
  • Ensure communication device (radio/phone) is functional.
  • Inspect emergency hammer or window breaker tools.
  • Check that vehicle registration and insurance documents are current.
  • Verify driver's license and any required endorsements are valid.
  • Ensure inspection certificates and permits are up to date.
  • Check that passenger capacity limits are clearly posted.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete daily vehicle inspection report and log any defects.
  • Record odometer reading and fuel level at start of shift.
  • Note any passenger complaints or incidents from previous day.
  • Verify that vehicle maintenance is current per schedule.
  • Check that all required permits and certifications are displayed.
  • Ensure route schedules and maps are current and accessible.
  • Document any issues requiring immediate attention or repair.
  • Sign off on inspection checklist with date and time.
