Monthly Bus Inspection Checklist

Comprehensive monthly inspections of all bus systems to ensure long-term reliability, safety compliance, and optimal fleet performance.

Engine & Drivetrain Systems

  • Check engine oil level, condition, and change if due (record mileage/hours).
  • Inspect coolant system for leaks, proper level, and freeze protection.
  • Test engine performance under load and idle conditions.
  • Examine drive belts for wear, proper tension, and alignment.
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition (if accessible).
  • Inspect differential oil levels and look for leaks.
  • Verify proper operation of engine cooling fans and thermostats.
  • Check air intake system and replace air filter if needed.
  • Inspect exhaust system for leaks, damage, or excessive emissions.

Braking System Inspection

  • Test service brake operation and pedal feel under various conditions.
  • Check brake fluid level and inspect for contamination or leaks.
  • Inspect brake pads/shoes for remaining thickness and even wear.
  • Examine brake rotors/drums for scoring, cracks, or warping.
  • Test parking brake engagement and holding capability.
  • Verify proper operation of brake warning lights and systems.
  • Check brake lines and hoses for damage, leaks, or deterioration.
  • Test anti-lock braking system (ABS) functionality if equipped.
  • Inspect air brake system components (if applicable) for proper pressure.

Steering & Suspension

  • Test steering response and check for excessive play or binding.
  • Inspect power steering fluid level and system for leaks.

  • Check suspension components (shocks, struts, springs) for wear.
  • Inspect bushings and joints for deterioration or excessive play.
  • Verify proper wheel alignment and tire wear patterns.

Electrical Systems

  • Test battery voltage, specific gravity, and terminal connections.
  • Check alternator charging rate and belt condition.
  • Inspect all exterior lights (headlights, taillights, turn signals, hazards).
  • Test interior lighting, dashboard indicators, and warning systems.
  • Verify proper operation of wipers, washers, and defrosters.
  • Check horn operation and emergency communication systems.
  • Test door control systems and passenger safety features.
  • Inspect wiring harnesses for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  • Verify proper function of wheelchair lift or accessibility equipment.

Tires & Wheels

  • Check tire pressure on all tires including spare (if equipped).
  • Inspect tread depth using gauge (minimum 4/32" for front, 2/32" for rear).
  • Examine tire sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or weather cracking.
  • Check for uneven wear patterns indicating alignment or suspension issues.
  • Verify all lug nuts are properly torqued and none are missing.
  • Inspect wheels for cracks, damage, or excessive corrosion.
  • Check valve stems and caps for proper sealing.
  • Rotate tires according to manufacturer's schedule if due.

Interior & Passenger Safety

  • Inspect all passenger seats for secure mounting and damage.
  • Test emergency exits and ensure they operate smoothly.
  • Check emergency equipment (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, reflectors).
  • Verify proper operation of passenger communication systems.
  • Inspect flooring, handrails, and stanchions for damage or wear.
  • Test HVAC system operation and filter condition.
  • Check driver's seat adjustment and visibility aids.
  • Verify proper operation of fare collection systems if equipped.
  • Inspect accessibility features and ensure ADA compliance.

Exterior Body & Structure

  • Inspect body panels for dents, rust, or structural damage.
  • Check door seals and weatherstripping for proper condition.
  • Examine windows and mirrors for cracks or visibility issues.
  • Verify proper operation of all external doors and mechanisms.
  • Inspect destination signs and external communication displays.
  • Check mounting points for external equipment (bike racks, etc.).
  • Examine undercarriage for damage, corrosion, or fluid leaks.
  • Verify proper operation of external warning devices.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Update maintenance records with inspection findings and actions taken.
  • Verify current registration, insurance, and inspection certificates.
  • Document any defects found and corrective actions required.
  • Schedule any necessary repairs or additional maintenance work.
  • Update vehicle mileage/hour meter readings in maintenance system.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT regulations and local requirements.
  • Complete inspection report and file appropriately.
  • Schedule next monthly inspection based on operating schedule.
