School Bus Driver Vehicle Inspection Checklist

Essential pre-trip safety inspections for school bus drivers to ensure student safety and regulatory compliance before each route.

Exterior Vehicle Inspection

  • Complete walk-around inspection checking for damage, leaks, or foreign objects.
  • Inspect body panels, bumpers, and ensure all are secure and undamaged.
  • Check all windows and mirrors for cracks, chips, or obstructions.
  • Verify license plate is clean, visible, and properly mounted.
  • Inspect exhaust system for damage and ensure tailpipe extends beyond bus body.
  • Check fuel tank cap is secure and area is free of leaks.
  • Examine undercarriage for fluid leaks or hanging components.

Tires & Wheels Inspection

  • Check tire pressure and tread depth on all wheels including spare.
  • Inspect tires for cuts, bulges, excessive wear, or foreign objects.
  • Verify proper tire inflation matches manufacturer specifications.
  • Examine wheel rims for cracks, damage, or missing components.
  • Ensure all lug nuts are present, tight, and show no signs of loosening.
  • Check valve stems and caps are properly installed.
  • Verify dual wheels are properly spaced and aligned.

Lighting & Warning Systems

  • Test headlights (high and low beam) and ensure proper alignment.
  • Check all running lights, taillights, and brake lights function properly.
  • Verify turn signals work correctly on both front and rear.
  • Test amber warning lights and red flashing lights operation.
  • Inspect stop sign arm extension and retraction (if equipped).
  • Check crossing control arm function (if equipped).

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Check engine oil level and condition using dipstick.
  • Inspect coolant level in radiator and overflow reservoir.

  • Test parking brake application and release function.
  • Check service brake pedal feel and travel distance.

Interior Safety & Student Seating

  • Inspect all student seats for damage and secure mounting.
  • Check aisle and floor areas for loose objects or trip hazards.
  • Verify all interior handholds and railings are secure.
  • Test interior lighting including dome lights and step lights.
  • Check that emergency exits are unobstructed and functional.
  • Ensure first aid kit is present, accessible, and properly stocked.
  • Verify fire extinguisher is mounted, charged, and accessible.
  • Check for proper ventilation and heating/cooling operation.

Door Systems & Student Safety

  • Test front door operation including opening, closing, and safety features.
  • Check rear emergency door operation and verify it opens easily.
  • Inspect door seals and weather stripping for damage.
  • Verify door warning lights and audible signals function.
  • Test interlock systems that prevent movement with doors open.
  • Check step condition and ensure non-slip surfaces are intact.
  • Verify emergency door release instructions are visible and current.
  • Test wheelchair lift operation and safety features (if equipped).

Driver Controls & Communication

  • Adjust driver's seat, mirrors, and steering wheel for proper positioning.
  • Test steering operation for smooth response and proper alignment.
  • Check operation of windshield wipers and washers at all speeds.
  • Verify horn operation and appropriate sound level.
  • Test two-way radio communication with dispatch or base.
  • Check dashboard warning lights during startup sequence.
  • Verify speedometer, fuel gauge, and temperature gauges function.
  • Test heater, defroster, and air conditioning systems.

Emergency Equipment & Documentation

  • Verify emergency triangles or flares are present and accessible.
  • Check that emergency evacuation procedures are posted and visible.
  • Ensure student roster and emergency contact information is current.
  • Verify driver's CDL license is current and properly endorsed.
  • Check that vehicle registration and insurance documents are present.
  • Confirm daily inspection forms and maintenance records are available.
  • Verify route assignments and any special instructions are current.
  • Record current mileage, fuel level, and any defects found.
