STUDENT SAFETY PRIORITY

This pre-trip inspection is mandated by federal regulations and is critical for student safety. All defects must be documented and addressed before transporting students.

Driver Documentation & Preparation

  • Verify valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with school bus endorsement.
  • Complete driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) from previous trip review.
  • Check trip manifest and route information for accuracy.
  • Ensure driver seat adjustment and mirror positioning are correct.
  • Verify emergency contact information and radio/communication devices are functional.
  • Review weather conditions and any route alerts or construction notices.

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Check engine oil level and condition (should be between min/max marks).
  • Inspect coolant level in radiator and overflow tank.
  • Verify power steering fluid level and check for leaks.
  • Test engine start-up and listen for unusual noises or vibrations.
  • Check air pressure gauge readings (should build to 100-125 PSI).
  • Inspect belts for proper tension, cracking, or fraying.
  • Verify exhaust system integrity and check for leaks or damage.
  • Test parking brake operation and air brake system functionality.

Exterior Inspection

  • Inspect all tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and sidewall damage.
  • Check wheel rims and lug nuts for tightness and damage.
  • Verify all exterior lights function properly (headlights, taillights, brake lights).
  • Test warning lights including amber warning lamps and red flashers.
  • Inspect stop sign arm operation and stop sign lights.
  • Check mirrors for proper adjustment and cleanliness.
  • Verify windshield and windows are clean and free of cracks.
  • Inspect body panels for damage that could affect safety.
  • Check fuel tank cap security and inspect for leaks.
  • Verify student crossing control arm operates correctly (if equipped).

Interior Safety Equipment

  • Test fire extinguisher presence, charge level, and accessibility.
  • Verify first aid kit is complete, accessible, and within expiration dates.
  • Check emergency evacuation door operation and exit signs.
  • Test emergency buzzer and backup alarm functionality.
  • Inspect seat condition and ensure all seats are properly secured.
  • Verify emergency roof hatches open and close properly.
  • Check that emergency equipment (triangles, flares) is present and accessible.
  • Test two-way radio or communication device operation.
  • Ensure emergency phone numbers are posted and visible.

Student Safety Systems

  • Test student safety lights and crossing control system.
  • Verify stop sign arm extends and retracts properly with appropriate lighting.
  • Check child safety locks on emergency exits and service doors.
  • Inspect student compartment for debris, damaged seats, or safety hazards.
  • Test student restraint systems and wheelchair securement devices (if equipped).
  • Verify adequate lighting in student compartment area.
  • Check aisle and step condition for trip hazards or damage.
  • Ensure student instruction cards are posted and legible.

Operational Controls Testing

  • Test steering for proper operation and excessive play.
  • Verify horn operation (both electric and air horn if equipped).
  • Check windshield wipers and washer system operation.
  • Test heating and defrosting systems for proper operation.
  • Verify dashboard warning lights and gauges function correctly.
  • Test service brakes for proper pedal feel and stopping power.
  • Check transmission operation in all gear ranges.
  • Verify speedometer and odometer are functioning accurately.

Final Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete and sign the Daily Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
  • Document any defects found and their corrective actions taken.
  • Verify bus registration, insurance, and inspection certificates are current.
  • Ensure maintenance records are up to date and accessible.
  • Report any safety concerns immediately to transportation supervisor.
  • Confirm bus is safe for student transport before beginning route.
  • File completed inspection report according to district policy.
