Driver Documentation & Preparation

Valid CDL with school bus endorsement and medical certificate current

Previous trip DVIR reviewed and any defects addressed

Trip manifest and route information verified and accessible

Emergency contact information and communication devices functional

Engine & Mechanical Systems

Engine oil level adequate and condition acceptable (between min/max marks)

Coolant level proper in radiator and overflow tank, no leaks visible

Air pressure builds to proper PSI (100-125) and no air leaks audible

Belts and hoses inspected for proper tension, cracks, or fraying

Power steering fluid level adequate and no leaks present

Exterior Inspection

All tires properly inflated with adequate tread depth (4/32" minimum)

All exterior lights functional (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals)

Warning lights operational (amber warning lamps and red flashers)

Stop sign arm extends/retracts properly with stop sign lights functioning

All mirrors properly adjusted, clean, and securely mounted

Windshield and windows clean and free of cracks or damage

Student Safety Systems

Student crossing control system operational and lights functional

Emergency exits properly marked and child safety locks functional

All student seats secure and in good condition, no protruding objects

Emergency roof hatches open and close properly, latches secure

Student compartment lighting adequate and aisle clear of debris

Emergency Equipment

Fire extinguisher present, charged, and easily accessible

First aid kit complete and supplies within expiration dates

Emergency triangles/flares present and accessible to driver

Emergency contact numbers posted and two-way radio functional

Operational Controls Testing

Service brakes operate properly with firm pedal feel

Parking brake holds vehicle securely on grade

Steering operates smoothly without excessive play or binding

Horn (electric and air horn) operational and adequately loud

Windshield wipers and washer system operate effectively

Dashboard gauges and warning lights function properly
