Bus Driver Walk-Around Checklist

Complete pre-trip exterior inspection checklist to ensure bus safety, operational readiness, and regulatory compliance for all bus types.

SAFETY FIRST REMINDER

This walk-around inspection is mandatory before every trip. All defects must be reported immediately. Do not operate the vehicle if critical safety items fail inspection.

Exterior Vehicle Condition

  • Inspect body panels for damage, dents, or loose parts.
  • Check for fluid leaks under the vehicle (oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid).
  • Verify all exterior panels and doors are properly secured.
  • Inspect bumpers and reflective tape for damage or missing sections.
  • Check that route number signs and destination displays are functional.
  • Ensure wheelchair lift or ramp operates smoothly (if equipped).
  • Verify emergency exits are not obstructed and function properly.

Lights & Electrical Systems

  • Test headlights (high and low beam) for proper operation and aim.
  • Check tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals on both sides.
  • Verify hazard warning lights function properly.
  • Test backup alarm and reverse lights.
  • Ensure clearance lights and marker lights are operational.
  • Check stop arm and warning lights (school buses).
  • Verify interior dome lights and destination sign illumination.

Tires & Wheels

  • Inspect all tires for proper inflation, wear patterns, and tread depth.
  • Check for cuts, bulges, or embedded objects in tire sidewalls.
  • Verify wheel lug nuts are tight and none are missing.
  • Inspect rims for cracks, damage, or excessive rust.
  • Check dual tires for proper spacing and contact.
  • Ensure spare tire is properly secured and inflated (if equipped).
  • Verify wheel wells are clear of debris or damage.

Mirrors, Windows & Visibility

  • Clean and adjust all mirrors for optimal visibility coverage.
  • Check mirror mounting brackets for tightness and damage.
  • Inspect windshield for cracks, chips, or obstructions.
  • Verify windshield wipers and washers operate properly.
  • Clean all passenger windows and check for damage.
  • Ensure backup camera system is clean and functional (if equipped).
  • Check that all required visibility aids are in place and clean.

Engine Compartment & Fluids

  • Check engine oil level and condition using dipstick.
  • Verify coolant level in expansion tank and check for leaks.
  • Inspect air filter condition and housing for damage.
  • Check power steering fluid level and condition.
  • Verify brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir.
  • Inspect belts for proper tension, wear, and fraying.
  • Check battery terminals for corrosion and secure connections.
  • Ensure engine compartment is free of debris or damage.

Safety Equipment & Emergency Items

  • Verify fire extinguisher is present, charged, and accessible.
  • Check first aid kit location and ensure it's properly stocked.
  • Ensure emergency reflective triangles are available and accessible.
  • Verify emergency exit hammer locations and accessibility.
  • Check that emergency contact information is posted and current.
  • Ensure emergency radio or communication device is functional.
  • Verify all required safety placards and notices are posted.

Brakes & Suspension

  • Inspect brake pads/shoes for adequate thickness (visual check).
  • Check brake lines and hoses for leaks, damage, or wear.
  • Verify air brake system pressure (if air brakes equipped).
  • Test parking brake engagement and release.
  • Inspect suspension components for damage or excessive wear.
  • Check shock absorbers for leaks or damage.
  • Ensure steering components are tight and not damaged.

Final Safety Verification

  • Walk completely around the vehicle to identify any missed items.
  • Verify fuel level is adequate for planned route.
  • Check that all inspection items have been completed.
  • Report any defects or concerns to dispatch/maintenance immediately.
  • Complete and sign pre-trip inspection report.
  • Ensure all tools and inspection equipment are secured.
  • Document inspection time and any findings in logbook.
