Comprehensive pre-departure inspection to ensure safety, operational readiness, and passenger protection before every bus trip.

Exterior Vehicle Inspection

  • Inspect all tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and sidewall damage.
  • Check all exterior lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights).
  • Verify all mirrors are clean, properly adjusted, and securely mounted.
  • Examine body panels for damage that could affect safety or operation.
  • Test all passenger and service doors for proper operation and sealing.
  • Check windshield and windows for cracks, chips, or visibility obstructions.
  • Inspect bumpers, steps, and handrails for damage or loose components.
  • Verify license plates are properly displayed and current.

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Check engine oil level and condition using dipstick.
  • Verify coolant level in overflow tank and inspect for leaks.
  • Test brake system pressure and check for air leaks.
  • Inspect power steering fluid level and condition.
  • Check transmission fluid level (if accessible).
  • Verify windshield washer fluid is adequate.
  • Inspect belts and hoses for wear, cracking, or loose connections.
  • Check battery connections and fluid levels (if applicable).

Interior Safety & Passenger Areas

  • Verify all passenger seats are secure and in good condition.
  • Test emergency exits and ensure they open properly.
  • Check aisle and steps are clear of debris and obstructions.
  • Ensure handrails and grab bars are secure and undamaged.
  • Verify interior lighting functions properly in all areas.
  • Test public address system and communication equipment.
  • Check floor surfaces for wear, damage, or trip hazards.
  • Ensure wheelchair accessibility equipment operates correctly.

Safety Equipment & Emergency Systems

  • Verify fire extinguisher is present, charged, and accessible.
  • Check first aid kit is complete and within expiration dates.
  • Test emergency flashers and warning devices.
  • Ensure emergency triangles or flares are available and functional.
  • Check emergency hammer/window breakers are accessible.
  • Verify emergency contact information is posted and current.
  • Test emergency radio communication systems.
  • Ensure safety instruction cards are available and legible.

Driver Controls & Operations

  • Adjust driver seat, mirrors, and steering wheel for optimal positioning.
  • Test all dashboard warning lights during startup sequence.
  • Verify speedometer, odometer, and all gauges are functional.
  • Check horn, windshield wipers, and defroster operation.
  • Test parking brake engagement and release.
  • Verify steering response and play within acceptable limits.
  • Ensure gear shifter operates smoothly through all positions.
  • Test service brake pedal feel and stopping capability (low speed).

Documentation & Final Checks

  • Verify driver's commercial license is current and appropriate class.
  • Check vehicle registration and insurance documents are current.
  • Ensure vehicle inspection certificates are valid and displayed.
  • Review route schedule and any special operating instructions.
  • Confirm fuel level is adequate for scheduled route.
  • Complete and sign pre-trip inspection report.
  • Report any defects or concerns to maintenance department.
  • Obtain approval from supervisor for any noted deficiencies.
