DOT COMPLIANCE REMINDER

This checklist ensures compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. All items must be inspected and documented according to 49 CFR Part 396 - Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance standards.

Pre-Inspection Documentation

  • Verify vehicle identification number (VIN) and registration documents.
  • Check driver's license validity and endorsements (CDL with passenger endorsement).
  • Review previous inspection reports and maintenance records.
  • Confirm vehicle is within inspection interval requirements.
  • Document odometer reading and inspection date/time.
  • Verify insurance documentation and registration are current.

Engine & Powertrain System

  • Check engine oil level and condition for contamination or excessive wear.
  • Inspect coolant level and condition, check for leaks in radiator and hoses.
  • Verify transmission fluid level and condition (automatic transmissions).
  • Test engine idle speed and check for unusual noises or vibrations.
  • Inspect belts and hoses for cracking, fraying, or improper tension.
  • Check exhaust system for leaks, proper mounting, and emissions compliance.
  • Verify air filter condition and replace if contaminated.
  • Test engine performance under load and acceleration.

Brake System Inspection

  • Test service brake pedal travel and firmness (maximum 3/4 travel).
  • Check parking brake engagement and holding capability on grade.
  • Inspect brake fluid level and condition in master cylinder.
  • Examine brake lines and hoses for leaks, damage, or corrosion.
  • Verify brake pad/shoe thickness meets minimum DOT standards.
  • Test brake system warning lights and indicators.
  • Check air brake system pressure and governor operation (if equipped).

Steering & Suspension System

  • Test steering wheel free play (maximum 10 degrees in either direction).

  • Examine suspension components for broken or damaged springs.
  • Check shock absorbers for proper operation and fluid leaks.
  • Verify front-end alignment through visual inspection and road test.
  • Inspect steering column and mounting for security and damage.
  • Test steering response and return-to-center capability.

Tires & Wheels

  • Check tire pressure on all tires including spare (per manufacturer specs).
  • Inspect tread depth using penny test or gauge (minimum 4/32" front, 2/32" rear).
  • Examine tire sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or irregular wear patterns.
  • Verify all tires are properly matched and DOT approved for vehicle.
  • Check wheel lug nuts for proper torque and ensure none are missing.
  • Inspect rims for cracks, damage, or excessive corrosion.
  • Verify valve stems are in good condition and caps are present.
  • Check for proper tire inflation and load rating compliance.

Lighting & Electrical Systems

  • Test all exterior lights: headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals.
  • Check hazard warning lights and emergency flasher operation.
  • Verify interior lighting including dashboard, step, and aisle lights.
  • Test horn operation and ensure adequate sound level.
  • Check battery condition, terminals, and charging system operation.
  • Inspect wiring for damage, proper routing, and secure connections.

  • Test windshield wipers and washer system operation.

Body & Interior Safety

  • Inspect passenger doors for proper operation and emergency release.
  • Check driver's seat adjustment and security of mounting.
  • Verify passenger seating is secure and meets capacity requirements.
  • Examine windows and mirrors for cracks, clarity, and proper adjustment.
  • Check floor condition for holes, damage, or safety hazards.
  • Inspect handholds and grab rails for security and condition.
  • Verify step treads are in good condition with proper anti-slip surface.
  • Check body panels and bumpers for damage affecting safety.

Emergency Equipment & Safety Devices

  • Verify fire extinguisher is present, charged, and within inspection date.
  • Check first aid kit contents and ensure supplies are not expired.
  • Inspect emergency exits and ensure they open properly from inside.
  • Test emergency communication device or two-way radio operation.
  • Verify emergency reflectors or flares are present and functional.
  • Check emergency evacuation procedures posting and accessibility.
  • Inspect wheelchair securement systems (if equipped).
  • Verify emergency contact information is current and visible.

DOT Compliance Items
