Daily School Bus Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist

Comprehensive safety inspection to ensure student safety and bus operational readiness before each trip.

STUDENT SAFETY PRIORITY

This pre-trip inspection is mandatory for all school bus operations. Any safety defects must be addressed before transporting students. Driver certification and compliance with state regulations are required.

Pre-Inspection Documentation

  • Verify driver's valid CDL with school bus endorsement and medical certificate.
  • Check vehicle registration, insurance, and inspection certificates are current.
  • Review previous trip reports and any outstanding maintenance issues.
  • Confirm route information and special passenger needs.
  • Document weather conditions and any special considerations for the day.
  • Ensure emergency contact information is readily available.

Exterior Vehicle Inspection

  • Walk around the entire bus checking for damage, leaks, or obstructions.
  • Inspect all tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and visible damage.
  • Check wheel lug nuts are properly tightened and none are missing.
  • Examine mirrors for cracks, proper adjustment, and secure mounting.
  • Test all exterior lights: headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals.
  • Verify school bus warning lights (amber and red) are functioning properly.
  • Check stop arm extends and retracts properly with clear signage.
  • Inspect body panels, doors, and windows for damage or sharp edges.
  • Ensure exhaust system is secure with no visible leaks or damage.
  • Check that all reflective tape and school bus markings are visible and intact.

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Check engine oil level and condition (no metal particles or contamination).
  • Verify coolant level in radiator and overflow tank.
  • Inspect hydraulic fluid levels for power steering and brakes.
  • Check windshield washer fluid level and spray pattern.
  • Test windshield wipers for proper operation and blade condition.
  • Inspect belts and hoses for cracks, fraying, or loose connections.
  • Check battery connections are clean and secure.
  • Verify air pressure (if air brakes) meets minimum requirements.
  • Test horn and backup alarm for proper operation.
  • Ensure fuel level is adequate for planned routes.

Interior Safety Inspection

  • Check all passenger seats are securely mounted and in good condition.
  • Inspect aisle and steps for damage, sharp edges, or slip hazards.
  • Test emergency door and window releases for proper operation.
  • Verify emergency exits are clearly marked and unobstructed.
  • Check that safety equipment is present and properly mounted.
  • Inspect handrails and grab bars for secure mounting.
  • Ensure floor is clean and free of debris or liquid spills.
  • Test interior lighting including dome lights and step well lights.
  • Check driver's seat adjustment and mirror positioning.
  • Verify all dashboard warning lights function during startup.

Safety Equipment Verification

  • Confirm fire extinguisher is properly charged and accessible.
  • Check first aid kit is complete and supplies are current.
  • Verify emergency triangles or flares are present and functional.
  • Inspect body fluid cleanup kit and ensure it's fully stocked.
  • Check emergency window hammer/escape tool is accessible.
  • Verify two-way radio or communication device is operational.
  • Confirm emergency evacuation procedures are posted and visible.
  • Check that emergency contact numbers are current and accessible.
  • Verify student roster and emergency information is on board.
  • Ensure all required safety signage is properly displayed.

Operational Systems Test

  • Start engine and allow proper warm-up time per manufacturer specifications.
  • Test service brakes for proper pedal feel and stopping power.
  • Check parking brake holds the vehicle securely on an incline.
  • Test steering for proper response and no excessive play.
  • Verify transmission shifts smoothly through all gears.
  • Test warning light system activation and student loading protocol.
  • Check heater/air conditioning operation as weather requires.
  • Test door operation including proper sealing and emergency release.
  • Verify all gauges read within normal operating ranges.
  • Test GPS/tracking system if equipped and ensure proper operation.

Final Inspection & Documentation

  • Complete pre-trip inspection form with all required signatures.
  • Document any defects found and actions taken to address them.
  • Notify maintenance department of any issues requiring attention.
  • Verify vehicle is safe for student transport before departure.
  • File inspection report in vehicle logbook or electronic system.
  • Adjust driver's seat, mirrors, and steering wheel for optimal safety.
