⚠️ DAILY INSPECTION REQUIREMENT: Federal regulations require daily inspection of all commercial vehicles. This inspection must be completed before the first passenger boards. Document all defects and ensure repairs are made before returning bus to service.
Pre-Inspection Preparation
Record bus number, route assignment, and current mileage
Note inspection start time
Gather inspection tools: tire gauge, flashlight, inspection forms
Review previous inspection reports for ongoing issues
Ensure bus is parked on level ground with parking brake set
Exterior Inspection - Body & Structure
Check bus body for damage affecting safety or operation
Test all passenger doors - must open/close smoothly
Check bike rack security and operation (if equipped)
Inspect destination signs and route displays
Ensure all required decals and numbers are visible
Check for body damage that could injure passengers
Lights & Signals
Test headlights - both high and low beams
Check all turn signals (front, rear, side)
Verify brake lights activate when pedal pressed
Test tail lights and marker lights
Check interior lighting for passenger areas
Verify emergency exit lighting
Test hazard warning flashers
Tires & Wheels
Check front tire tread depth - minimum 4/32"
Check rear tire tread depth - minimum 2/32"
Verify proper tire inflation with gauge
Look for cuts, bulges, or embedded objects
Check that all lug nuts are present and tight
Inspect for uneven wear indicating alignment issues
Verify valve stems are capped and undamaged
Interior - Driver's Area
Adjust driver's seat and ensure it locks in position
Check all mirrors for proper adjustment and cleanliness
Test horn operation
Verify all gauges and warning lights function
Test windshield wipers and washer
Check two-way radio/communication system
Verify fare collection system operational
Ensure driver safety barrier secure (if equipped)
Passenger Area Safety
Check all passenger seats are secure and undamaged
Verify handrails and stanchions are tight
Ensure floor is clean and free of slip hazards
Test stop request system (pull cords/buttons)
Check public address (PA) system
Verify interior lighting adequate for passenger safety
Ensure aisles clear of obstructions
Check emergency exit operation and signage
Accessibility Features (ADA Compliance)
Verify priority seating signs are visible
Test wheelchair securement systems
Check audio/visual stop announcements
Ensure kneeling feature operates (if equipped)
Verify wheelchair ramp warning lights/alarms work
Check that mobility aid areas are clear
Emergency Equipment
Verify fire extinguisher is charged and properly mounted
Check first aid kit is stocked and sealed
Ensure three reflective triangles are present
Verify body fluid cleanup kit available

Mechanical Systems
Check engine oil level with dipstick

Ensure adequate fuel for assigned route
Look under bus for any fluid leaks
Check belts and hoses for wear
Verify battery connections are secure
Brake System Tests
Check brake pedal travel - should have firm feel with reserve
Test parking brake - must hold bus securely
For air brakes: verify pressure builds to 90-120 psi
Check for air leaks (listen for hissing)
Test low air pressure warning (should activate before 60 psi)
Perform brake application test
Operational Test
Start engine and listen for unusual noises
Check steering for excessive play
Test service brakes at low speed
Verify transmission shifts properly
Test heating/air conditioning systems
Check defroster operation
Perform short test drive if possible
Post-Inspection Requirements
Record inspection end time
Document all defects found
Tag bus "OUT OF SERVICE" if critical defects found
Report defects to maintenance immediately
Complete and sign inspection form
File inspection report as required
Notify dispatch of bus status
