CRITICAL SAFETY REQUIREMENT

Daily pre-trip inspections are MANDATORY for all school transportation vehicles. Any defects found must be corrected before transporting students. Document all inspections for DOT compliance and liability protection.

Federal & State Compliance

Pre-Inspection Setup

  • Verify driver has valid CDL with appropriate endorsements and medical certificate.

Exterior Vehicle Inspection

  • Walk around vehicle checking for body damage, dents, or scratches.
  • Inspect all tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and damage.
  • Check wheel lug nuts are tight and none are missing.
  • Test all exterior lights: headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals.
  • Verify stop sign arm operates properly and warning lights function.
  • Check that mirrors are properly adjusted and not cracked.
  • Inspect windshield and windows for cracks or damage affecting visibility.
  • Ensure license plates are secure and clearly visible.

Interior Safety Systems

Passenger Area Inspection

Emergency Equipment Check

  • Verify first aid kit is present, stocked, and easily accessible.

  • Ensure reflective triangles are present (3 required) and in good condition.
  • Confirm spare tire is properly inflated and jack equipment is present.
  • Check that emergency contact information is posted and current.
  • Verify student capacity sign is posted and accurate.
  • Ensure emergency evacuation procedures are posted and visible.
  • Check that radio or communication device functions properly.

Fuel and Fluids Check

  • Verify adequate fuel level for planned route plus reserve.
  • Check that fuel cap is tight and not damaged.
  • Inspect diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level if equipped.
  • Look for fuel leaks around tank, lines, and engine area.
  • Check windshield washer fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Verify transmission fluid level if dipstick is accessible.
  • Inspect hydraulic fluid reservoir for door operation system.
  • Check air brake system pressure and listen for leaks.

Final Systems Test

  • Start engine and allow proper warm-up time per manufacturer specs.
  • Test all dashboard warning lights extinguish after startup.
  • Check air pressure builds to proper level (school buses).
  • Test low air pressure warning system activation.
  • Verify transmission shifts properly through all gears.
  • Test power steering response and effort required.
  • Check that engine runs smoothly without unusual noises.
  • Verify all electrical systems operate normally under load.

Documentation and Route Preparation

  • Complete daily inspection report with all findings documented.
  • Report any defects immediately to transportation supervisor.
